The British School of Guangzhou was established in June 2005, in response to the demands and expressions of interest from the international community of Guangzhou. The school is wholly UK managed, governed by an Executive Board of Directors and run on a day to day basis by the headmaster.

BSG is sponsored by The British Schools Development Board, a non-profit organisation that aims to promote quality British-style education world-wide. The school is also an active member of The East Asian Association of British International Schools (EAABIS), is registered with the Qualification and Curriculum Authority in the UK (Register number: 1880003), and is fully licensed by the Chinese authorities.
